La Red Bull Illume, vous connaissez ? c’est l’un des plus importants concours photo au monde.

Cette année, pas moins de 22 764 images en compétition, 4 337 photographes et 50 finalistes dont un polynésien…moi :-) La classe !

L’aventure commence par mon inscription sur internet au concours, un peu par défi pour voir ce que je vaux. Mais finalement une de mes photos plaît et passe le stade des 250 semi-finalistes puis finalement, Red Bull International me contacte fin août 2010 pour m’annoncer que je fais partie des 50 finalistes ! Ma photo sélectionnée parmi 23 000… la consécration pour n’importe quel photographe !

Dans la foulée, la marque m’invite à participer à la cérémonie de remise des prix et de dévoilement des photos au grand public qui se déroule à Dublin. En moins d’une semaine et grâce à l’aide de la compagnie Air France, qui a réussi à me trouver une place en cette période de haute saison, et de la marque He’e Nalu, qui m’a sponsorisé, je suis dans l’avion en direction de l’Irlande !

Et c’est après 3 avions, 2 escales et 30 heures de vol que j’arrive enfin au Trinity College de Dublin, une des plus anciennes universités d’Europe, où se déroule la cérémonie de remise des prix. 50 finalistes, 10 gagnants par catégorie et c’est finalement Chris Burkard, avec une image de surf féerique prise au Chili, qui gagne la Red Bull Illume 2010 ! Pas de rancœur, après tout je dois bien l’avouer, cette photo était l’une de mes préférées.

Mais rien n’est perdu, reste encore à dévoiler les 50 photos finalistes au grand public. A la nuit tombée, l’exposition est inaugurée dans la cour centrale du Trinity College. Imprimées en grand format et installées sur des panneaux lumineux de 2 mètres de haut, elles y ont brilleront jusqu’au 11 septembre. Puis l’exposition parcourra le monde…et qui sait ? Peut-être sera-t-elle un jour visible à Tahiti !

Moi, grand gagnant ? non, mais en retour, une expérience inoubliable !

Assister à un événement aussi prestigieux est quelque chose d’unique. J’ai pu rencontrer des photographes du monde entier, échanger avec eux…Et étonnamment, on se rend compte que certaines des photos sélectionnées ont été réalisées spontanément, sans aucune préméditation ; d’où l’importance d’être « au bon endroit, au bon moment »! « Ma photographie, je l’ai faite depuis le public lors d’une compétition.» « Ah, la mienne, j’étais tranquille sur une route en face de la falaise »…
Pour ma part, j’ai pris ma photo à la fin d’une session juste pour avoir une photo de profil délirante sur Facebook.

Un auto-portrait qui me fait toujours sourire par son histoire mais finalement un auto-portrait qui m’a conduit sur les rangs des meilleurs photographes de sport et d’action au monde.

BIOGRAPHY

I was born in Tahiti, French Polynesia, thirty one years ago, and grew up surfing with Tahitian icons Manoa Drollet, Hira Teriinatoofa and WCT battler Michel Bourez. One day, I came across a few photoblogs on the internet, loved them and just wanted to do that as well. An IT specialist and web developer, I created my photoblog and my website in 2005, which would show my love for my country, my Tahitian lifestyle and my passion for surfing with lots of water shots.
I’ve been surfing my whole life, and photography has been a means to live and express my passion in a different way. I love being alone in the middle of nowhere, capturing magical and ephemeral moments, enjoying the waves’ sweetness, just feeling the Hau Maru (« sweet atmosphere » in Tahitian). I believe that discovering the water world in this way definitely makes us progress in other areas of our life.
In less than five years, my work has been featured in many leading surf magazines and local ads.  My photos have also been exhibited twice this year in Tahiti, then chosen to represent the beauty of Tahiti’s surfing during the World Expo in Shanghai, in the French Pavilion.
I am currently focusing on printing fine art posters of my Tahitian “naked” waves’ photos. I would be more than happy to find international distributors for my posters as well as sponsorships to carry on further work in photography and cinematography (for which I’ve been trained for this last year).

ABOUT THE SHOT

Teahupo’o is the ultimate Tahitian Wave: perfect and powerful. But French Polynesia has a lot more to offer than just this wave : we have here an incredible number of surf spots, all of them perfect, some of them still considered as secret.
I woke up early that morning to take shots of my favorite subject : empty waves. I took my time to check the conditions on different locations, and finally found this wave breaking in the most perfect way.
Watershots have this special something that makes them so different from other kind of photos: opening the water housing is like opening a Christmas present. It’s like being a child again, under their Christmas tree: “there’s a surprise in this box… maybe more!! What do they look like???” This day was an amazing one, with some of the best shots I had ever taken in the water. Most of them are now part of my main photo gallery, which you can see on my website.
But after two hours shooting amazingly beautiful waves with nobody around, I felt like it was time to let go, to have fun, and to make a self-portrait I could use as a profile photo for my website or my Facebook page.  I really had a good time unwinding all alone in the waves, meditating, and I wanted to express all this happiness, just like a surfer coming out of the barrel.
Here’s the result: Great depth of field. Endless barrel. Unreal expression on my face. Fist up to the sky. Very dynamic.
To me, the whole composition looks like a sacred cocoon, which perfectly shows my state of mind at that very moment.
